Being in the public eye leaves a lot of room for scrutiny and being looked at under a microscope is a daily occurrence for a lot of celebrities. Fat shaming is definitely something that many celebrities have to face with the likes of Pink, Selena Gomez and Kelly Clarkson. However recently many of these celebrities have been standing up to the backlash. Kelly Clarkson told Ellen DeGeneres, I think what hurts my feelings for people is that I’ll have a meet-and-greet after the show and a girl who’s, like, bigger than me will be in the meet-and-greet and be like, ‘Wow, if they think you’re big, I must be so fat to them’ (Star Tribune).
Many artists have been taking to their social media accounts and fighting off the haters. Pink being an example, the singer stated on her Twitter that, I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy and my healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off (Star Tribune). I think it is absolutely amazing and critical that celebrities fight against the hate. They have so much power and influence over the general population and I think they can be great advocates for body positivity. Celebrities such as these have the power to start these really difficult conversations and change cultural norms. They can be the influence for many young boys and girls to feel good about their bodies. I think this article is meant to spread hope to younger people like myself. It shows that there is some positivity in the media and that our bodies don’t have to be considered bad. It has always fascinated me as to why so many people are obsessed with becoming famous when they are subjected to such abuse, especially against their bodies.
I think celebrities can help set a new standard, a new “norm”. I believe they are capable of being a voice for body acceptance and positivity. They can show the world with allowing their bodies to exist, by not conforming to the norms and hate they receive. I think if young people see someone with influence accept their body for what it is, it will in turn be easier for them. It’s a domino effect. I think that we need to crush the idea of “having fat is unhealthy”, it just isn’t realistic to expect that there can be absolutely no fat on a person’s body. We need to send a message saying that every body is a good body. I repeat,
EVERY BODY IS A GOOD BODY.
I think what these stars are doing is an excellent example of the direction the media needs to go in. Acceptance needs to be the new model. Let’s get rid of the things that tell us we aren’t good enough, or at least call them on their bluff. I cannot stress enough how vital it is, we as a collective society need to start seeing every single body as enough, every body is a good body.
